Aircraft Launch and Recovery Specialists

Operate and maintain catapults, arresting gear, and associated mechanical, hydraulic, and control systems involved primarily in aircraft carrier takeoff and landing operations. Duties include installing and maintaining visual landing aids; testing and maintaining launch and recovery equipment using electric and mechanical test equipment and hand tools; activating airfield arresting systems, such as crash barriers and cables, during emergency landing situations; directing aircraft launch and recovery operations using hand or light signals; and maintaining logs of airplane launches, recoveries, and equipment maintenance.

What They Do

Aircraft launch and recovery specialists work primarily on aircraft carriers, operating the complex systems that safely launch and retrieve military planes from ship decks. They maintain and operate catapults that propel aircraft to takeoff speed within a short runway distance, as well as arresting gear systems that catch landing planes with tailhooks and cables. Throughout their shifts, these specialists perform detailed inspections and testing of hydraulic, mechanical, and control systems to ensure everything functions flawlessly under high-pressure conditions. They also install and maintain visual landing aids that help pilots navigate onto the carrier deck. During flight operations, they use hand signals and light communications to coordinate with pilots and deck crews, orchestrating the precise timing required for safe launches and recoveries. When emergencies arise, they quickly activate crash barriers and backup arresting systems. The work environment is physically demanding and often conducted outdoors in all weather conditions, with constant exposure to jet engine noise, sea spray, and the dynamic movement of the ship. Success in this role requires mechanical aptitude, strong attention to detail, the ability to remain calm under pressure, and excellent communication skills within a tightly coordinated team.
