What They Do

Automotive engineers design and develop the complex systems that make vehicles run safely and efficiently. They work on everything from engines and transmissions to electrical systems, suspension components, and safety features like airbags and collision-avoidance technology. Much of their day involves using sophisticated computer-aided design software to create detailed models and run simulations that test how parts will perform under different conditions. They collaborate closely with other engineers, designers, and manufacturing specialists to solve problems and refine their designs. Beyond their computer screens, automotive engineers spend time in testing facilities and on proving grounds, where they observe prototypes being pushed to their limits. They analyze data from crash tests, fuel efficiency trials, and durability assessments to identify improvements. Some specialize in particular vehicle types—passenger cars, trucks, or electric vehicles—while others focus on specific systems like powertrains or aerodynamics. The role demands strong analytical abilities and creativity to balance competing priorities like performance, safety, cost, and environmental impact. Most automotive engineers work for vehicle manufacturers or their suppliers, typically in offices with occasional visits to manufacturing plants and testing sites.
