What They Do

Bartenders create and serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages in restaurants, bars, hotels, and entertainment venues. They spend their shifts standing behind the bar, taking drink orders from customers seated at the bar or from servers who relay orders from table guests. They mix cocktails by measuring and combining ingredients according to recipes or customer preferences, pour beer and wine, and often create their own signature drinks. Between serving drinks, bartenders maintain their workspace by washing glassware, restocking supplies, slicing garnishes like citrus fruits, and ensuring the bar area stays clean and organized.
