What They Do

Commercial and industrial designers shape the products people use every day, from smartphones and furniture to kitchen appliances and automobiles. They begin projects by researching user needs, market trends, and manufacturing constraints, then sketch concepts and create detailed digital models using computer-aided design software. Throughout the design process, they balance aesthetics, functionality, cost, and safety while collaborating with engineers, marketers, and manufacturers to ensure their vision can be produced efficiently. They build prototypes, test designs with focus groups, and refine details like materials, colors, and ergonomics based on feedback. Much of their work happens in studios or offices equipped with drafting tables, 3D printers, and design software, though they also visit manufacturing facilities and attend industry trade shows. Successful designers blend creative vision with practical problem-solving skills, staying current on emerging technologies and consumer preferences. They need strong visualization abilities to imagine how products will look and function, along with technical knowledge of materials and production methods. The role requires patience for iteration, as designs typically go through multiple revisions before reaching the market.
