Cytotechnologists

Stain, mount, and study cells to detect evidence of cancer, hormonal abnormalities, and other pathological conditions following established standards and practices.

What They Do

Cytotechnologists spend their days examining human cells under microscopes to detect diseases, particularly cancer, before symptoms appear. Working primarily in hospital laboratories, diagnostic centers, or private pathology labs, they prepare and analyze cell samples collected from patients through Pap smears, fine needle aspirations, and other procedures. Their morning might begin with processing specimens—fixing them on glass slides, applying special stains to highlight cellular details, and mounting them for examination. They then systematically scan each slide, searching for abnormal cell patterns, irregular shapes, or other signs of disease. When they identify suspicious cells, they document their findings with detailed notes and sometimes photographs, then flag these samples for a pathologist's review.
