What They Do

Diagnostic medical sonographers use specialized ultrasound equipment to capture detailed images of organs, tissues, and blood flow inside the human body. They begin each procedure by reviewing patient medical history and the physician's orders to determine which areas need imaging. After explaining the process to patients and positioning them correctly, sonographers apply gel to the skin and maneuver a handheld transducer to capture the necessary images from multiple angles. Throughout the examination, they adjust equipment settings, analyze the images for quality, and ensure they've documented all requested anatomical structures.
