Machinists

Machinists transform raw metal into precision parts used in everything from medical devices to aircraft engines. Working primarily in manufacturing facilities and machine shops, they spend their days operating computer-controlled equipment like lathes, milling machines, and grinders that cut, shape, and finish metal components to exact specifications—sometimes within tolerances of 1/10,000th of an inch. They read technical blueprints and engineering drawings to understand what needs to be created, then select the appropriate tools, calculate cutting speeds, and program or adjust machines accordingly. Throughout production, machinists continuously measure their work with micrometers, calipers, and gauges to ensure each piece meets strict quality standards. The work requires strong attention to detail and the ability to visualize three-dimensional objects from two-dimensional drawings. Successful machinists combine mechanical aptitude with mathematical skills and take pride in producing flawless components. Many also troubleshoot equipment problems and perform routine maintenance on their machines. While modern machinists increasingly work with computerized equipment, they still need hands-on skills with traditional manual machines and must understand how different metals behave during cutting and shaping processes.
