What They Do

Marine engineers and naval architects work at the intersection of engineering and maritime technology, designing and developing everything from cargo ships and submarines to yachts and offshore drilling platforms. Naval architects focus on the overall design of vessels, determining hull shape, stability, and structural integrity, while marine engineers concentrate on propulsion systems, electrical networks, heating and cooling systems, and other onboard machinery. They spend their time creating technical drawings, running computer simulations to test designs, and analyzing how vessels will perform under various conditions. Much of their work happens in offices using specialized design software, though they also visit shipyards during construction and go aboard vessels to oversee installations or troubleshoot problems.
