What They Do

Obstetricians and gynecologists provide comprehensive healthcare focused on women's reproductive health throughout their lives. They spend their days seeing patients in medical offices and clinics, performing routine examinations like Pap smears and breast exams, diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the reproductive system, and counseling patients about contraception, fertility, and menopause. When working as obstetricians, they monitor pregnancies through regular prenatal visits, order ultrasounds and tests, and deliver babies in hospital settings—often at unpredictable hours when patients go into labor. They also perform surgeries, from cesarean sections to hysterectomies, requiring time in operating rooms. Between patient appointments, they review lab results, consult with other physicians, and update medical records. The work environment shifts between exam rooms, hospitals, and surgical suites, demanding both excellent manual dexterity for procedures and strong communication skills to discuss sensitive health matters with patients. Success in this field requires stamina for long or irregular hours, the ability to make quick decisions during emergencies, compassion for patients during vulnerable moments, and a commitment to staying current with evolving medical research and techniques in women's health.
