Ophthalmic Medical Technicians

Assist ophthalmologists by performing ophthalmic clinical functions. May administer eye exams, administer eye medications, and instruct the patient in care and use of corrective lenses.

What They Do

Ophthalmic medical technicians work directly with ophthalmologists to help diagnose and treat eye conditions. They spend their days performing preliminary eye examinations, including measuring visual acuity, depth perception, and color vision. They operate specialized equipment to test eye pressure, map the surface of the eye, and photograph the retina to detect diseases like glaucoma or macular degeneration. These technicians also prepare patients for procedures by dilating pupils, administering eye drops, and explaining what to expect during their visit.
