What They Do

Dispensing opticians help people see clearly by fitting them with the right eyeglasses and contact lenses based on prescriptions from eye doctors. They spend their days working directly with customers in optical shops, retail stores, or eye care offices, guiding them through the process of selecting frames that complement their face shape and lifestyle needs. After taking precise measurements of the customer's face, pupil distance, and bridge width, they prepare detailed work orders for optical laboratories that specify exactly how lenses should be ground and mounted. When the finished eyeglasses arrive, dispensing opticians carefully verify that the lenses match the prescription and make any necessary adjustments to ensure a comfortable, accurate fit. For customers choosing contact lenses, they provide hands-on instruction for proper insertion, removal, and care routines. Throughout the day, they also repair broken frames, replace lenses, and use specialized tools to reshape frames for better comfort. Success in this role requires excellent attention to detail, strong communication skills, and genuine patience when working with customers who may be frustrated by vision problems or unfamiliar with eyewear options.
