What They Do

Railroad conductors and yardmasters keep trains running safely and on schedule through careful coordination and oversight. Conductors work aboard passenger or freight trains, serving as the crew leader responsible for the entire train's operation. They communicate with engineers about track conditions and speed restrictions, ensure cargo is properly secured, and on passenger trains, may assist travelers and collect tickets. They monitor the train's progress, handle paperwork for cargo transfers, and make decisions about safety procedures. Yardmasters, meanwhile, direct operations at rail yards where trains are assembled and disassembled. They review schedules and switching orders, then coordinate workers who couple and uncouple rail cars to build new trains. They monitor the movement of locomotives and cars throughout the yard using radio communication and computer systems. Both roles require constant attention to safety protocols and communication with multiple team members. The work happens in all weather conditions, with conductors spending time both inside train cabs and outside inspecting equipment. Success in these positions requires strong decision-making abilities, attention to detail, and the ability to stay calm under pressure while managing complex logistics.
