What They Do

Bailiffs serve as the security presence and procedural coordinators in courtrooms, ensuring that legal proceedings run smoothly and safely. They maintain order during trials and hearings, monitoring courtroom behavior and intervening if anyone becomes disruptive or threatening. Before court sessions begin, bailiffs typically check the courtroom for security concerns, escort judges to and from the bench, and announce the judge's entrance with the traditional call to order. Throughout proceedings, they manage the movement of defendants, especially those in custody, and coordinate jury activities—from escorting jurors to and from the jury room to delivering evidence during deliberations.
