Biochemists and Biophysicists

Study the chemical composition or physical principles of living cells and organisms, their electrical and mechanical energy, and related phenomena. May conduct research to further understanding of the complex chemical combinations and reactions involved in metabolism, reproduction, growth, and heredity. May determine the effects of foods, drugs, serums, hormones, and other substances on tissues and vital processes of living organisms.

What They Do

Biochemists and biophysicists investigate the fundamental chemical and physical processes that make life possible. They spend much of their time in laboratories conducting experiments to understand how cells function, how organisms respond to different substances, and how biological systems work at the molecular level. Their research might focus on areas like metabolism, genetic expression, drug interactions, or disease mechanisms. They design and execute experiments, operate sophisticated equipment like mass spectrometers and electron microscopes, analyze complex data sets, and document their findings in detailed reports and scientific publications.
