What They Do

Interpreters and translators bridge communication gaps between people who speak different languages, though their work differs significantly. Interpreters work with spoken or signed language in real-time, converting conversations, speeches, or presentations as they happen. They might work at conferences, medical appointments, courtroom proceedings, or business meetings, requiring quick thinking and excellent memory. Some interpreters specialize in sign language, facilitating communication for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. Translators, by contrast, work with written materials such as books, documents, websites, or technical manuals. They carefully convert text from one language to another while preserving the original meaning, tone, and cultural nuances. This work typically happens at a computer, allowing time for research and revision to ensure accuracy.
