What They Do

Postal service mail carriers spend their days organizing and delivering mail along designated routes in neighborhoods, business districts, or rural areas. They begin each shift at a post office, sorting letters, packages, and other mail items in the sequence of their delivery route. Carriers load their delivery vehicles or carts and then head out to cover their assigned territory, which might span several miles. They walk or drive to each address, placing mail in mailboxes, delivering packages to doorsteps, and occasionally collecting outgoing mail. Along the way, they handle special deliveries that require signatures and may need to provide basic postal information to customers they encounter.
