What They Do

Security guards protect people, property, and assets by maintaining a visible presence and monitoring activity in various locations. They patrol assigned areas on foot or in vehicles, checking doors and windows to ensure buildings are secure, and watch for suspicious behavior or safety hazards. Many guards monitor surveillance cameras and alarm systems from a central control room, while others staff entrances where they check identification, sign in visitors, and screen bags or packages. Some operate metal detectors and X-ray machines at airports, government buildings, or special events.
