What They Do

Boilermakers construct, install, and maintain the massive vessels that hold liquids and gases under extreme pressure and heat in power plants, factories, and ships. They work with enormous boilers that generate steam for electricity, large tanks that store chemicals, and pressure vessels used in oil refineries. Their days involve reading complex blueprints, cutting and shaping heavy metal plates with precision tools, and welding thick steel sections together to create leak-proof seals. They use cranes and rigging equipment to position multi-ton components, then carefully align everything using levels, plumb bobs, and laser instruments. Maintenance work requires them to inspect vessels for cracks or corrosion, replace worn valves and fittings, and sometimes work inside cramped tanks to make repairs.
