What They Do

Structural iron and steel workers build the metal frameworks that form the skeletons of buildings, bridges, and other large structures. They spend their days high above the ground, using cranes and hoisting equipment to lift massive steel beams and columns into position. Once these heavy pieces are in place, workers carefully align them according to blueprints, then secure them together using bolts, rivets, or welding. The work involves reading construction plans, measuring precisely, and coordinating closely with crane operators and other team members through hand signals and radios.
