What They Do

Brickmasons and blockmasons construct and repair walls, walkways, fences, chimneys, and other structures using bricks, concrete blocks, and similar materials. They begin each project by examining blueprints or plans to determine the layout, then prepare the work area by cleaning surfaces and setting up scaffolding if needed. Using hand tools and power saws, they cut and shape materials to fit specific spaces and angles. The core of their work involves spreading mortar—a cement mixture that binds materials together—and carefully laying each brick or block to create level, straight, and structurally sound walls. They use levels, plumb lines, and measuring tools to ensure precision, as even small errors can compromise a structure's integrity.
