What They Do

Cashiers handle financial transactions at checkout counters in stores, restaurants, gas stations, and countless other retail environments. Throughout their shift, they greet customers, scan or manually enter product codes, calculate totals, and process various payment methods including cash, credit cards, debit cards, mobile payments, and gift cards. They count back change accurately, provide receipts, and answer basic questions about prices or store policies. Beyond processing payments, cashiers often bag purchases, handle returns and exchanges, and maintain an organized, well-stocked checkout area. They may verify customer identification for age-restricted items like alcohol or tobacco and watch for counterfeit bills or fraudulent payment methods.
