What They Do
Clinical and counseling psychologists work directly with clients to address mental health concerns, emotional challenges, and life transitions. They spend much of their time conducting therapy sessions—whether one-on-one, with families, or in groups—where they help people work through depression, anxiety, relationship issues, trauma, or adjustment difficulties. Before treatment begins, they assess clients through structured interviews, psychological testing, and careful observation to understand their symptoms and develop appropriate treatment plans.
These psychologists typically work in private practices, hospitals, mental health clinics, university counseling centers, or community health organizations. Their days involve documenting sessions carefully, consulting with other healthcare providers about patient care, and staying current with research on therapeutic techniques. Between appointments, they might review case notes, develop treatment strategies, or handle administrative tasks related to their practice.
Success in this field requires strong listening skills, empathy, and the ability to build trust with people from diverse backgrounds. They need patience to work through complex issues over time and critical thinking skills to recognize patterns in behavior and select effective interventions. The work can be emotionally demanding, as psychologists regularly hear about difficult experiences, but many find it deeply rewarding to help people achieve better mental health and improved quality of life.
