Clinical Neuropsychologists
Assess and diagnose patients with neurobehavioral problems related to acquired or developmental disorders of the nervous system, such as neurodegenerative disorders, traumatic brain injury, seizure disorders, and learning disabilities. Recommend treatment after diagnosis, such as therapy, medication, or surgery. Assist with evaluation before and after neurosurgical procedures, such as deep brain stimulation.
What They Do
Clinical neuropsychologists work at the intersection of brain science and psychology, evaluating patients whose thinking, memory, or behavior has changed due to neurological conditions. They spend much of their time administering specialized tests that measure attention, language, problem-solving, and other cognitive abilities. These assessments help determine whether someone's difficulties stem from conditions like stroke, dementia, traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, or learning disorders. After testing, they analyze complex data patterns to pinpoint which brain areas may be affected and how these changes impact daily functioning.
Beyond diagnosis, clinical neuropsychologists develop personalized treatment recommendations, which might include cognitive rehabilitation, therapy referrals, medication consultation with physicians, or lifestyle modifications. They often work closely with neurosurgeons, evaluating patients before and after procedures like brain tumor removal or deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease. They may also assess children struggling academically to identify underlying learning disabilities. Most work in hospitals, medical centers, or private practices, though some conduct research or teach. Success in this field requires exceptional analytical skills, patience for detailed work, compassion for patients facing difficult diagnoses, and the ability to explain complex findings clearly to patients, families, and medical colleagues.
