What They Do

Drywall and ceiling tile installers transform the bare frames of buildings into smooth, finished interior spaces ready for paint and decoration. They measure, cut, and hang large sheets of drywall (also called wallboard or plasterboard) to cover the studs and joists of interior walls and ceilings. This work requires precision in measuring and cutting materials to fit around windows, doors, outlets, and other fixtures. Many installers also apply and mount acoustical tiles or sound-absorbing panels to reduce noise in offices, schools, and other buildings. The physical nature of this work means installers spend their days lifting heavy materials, working on ladders and scaffolding, and holding awkward positions while securing panels overhead.
