What They Do

Geological technicians work alongside geologists and engineers to collect and analyze data about Earth's materials and structures. They spend their time both in the field and in laboratories, using specialized equipment to measure and test rock samples, soil, and drilling materials. In the field, they may collect samples from mining sites, oil wells, or construction areas, operating instruments that detect minerals, petroleum, or gas deposits. They also monitor drilling operations, examining mud and rock cuttings brought up from bore holes to determine what lies beneath the surface.
