What They Do

Industrial ecologists study how human industrial systems can work more like natural ecosystems, where nothing goes to waste. They analyze the flow of materials and energy through manufacturing processes, supply chains, and entire economies to find ways to reduce environmental impact while maintaining productivity. Their work involves collecting and interpreting data about resource consumption, waste generation, and pollution across different industries. They might assess a product's environmental footprint from raw material extraction through disposal, or help companies redesign manufacturing processes to reuse byproducts that would otherwise become waste.
