What They Do

Mechanical insulation workers install protective coverings on pipes, ducts, boilers, and other industrial and commercial equipment to control temperature, prevent energy loss, and reduce noise. They work in a variety of settings including power plants, manufacturing facilities, hospitals, office buildings, and aboard ships, often moving between different job sites as projects are completed. Their day-to-day tasks include measuring and cutting insulation materials like fiberglass, foam, and mineral wool to fit around mechanical systems, then securing these materials with adhesives, staples, or wire. They also apply protective coverings such as canvas, plastic, or aluminum sheeting over the insulation to shield it from weather and damage.
