What They Do

Library assistants handle the essential behind-the-scenes and front-desk operations that keep libraries running smoothly. They spend much of their day checking books and materials in and out at the circulation desk, helping patrons locate items in the collection, and processing new library card applications. A significant portion of their work involves organizing returned materials, carefully sorting them by call number, and re-shelving books, DVDs, audiobooks, and other media in their proper locations throughout the library. They also maintain the library's catalog system by updating records when items are added, withdrawn, or transferred between branches.
