What They Do

Soil and plant scientists spend their days investigating how plants grow and interact with their environment, whether in laboratory settings, greenhouses, or agricultural fields. They collect and analyze soil samples to understand nutrient composition, pH levels, and mineral content, then study how these factors affect plant health and crop yields. Much of their work involves designing and conducting experiments—testing different fertilizers, irrigation methods, or pest management strategies to help farmers and land managers improve productivity while maintaining environmental sustainability. They might examine plant diseases under microscopes, use specialized equipment to measure soil properties, or monitor experimental plots over entire growing seasons.
