What They Do

Telecommunications line installers and repairers work outdoors and at heights to establish and maintain the physical infrastructure that enables phone, internet, and cable services. They spend much of their time climbing utility poles or working in underground access points and building telecommunications equipment rooms. Their daily tasks include laying and connecting fiber-optic and copper cables, installing junction boxes and circuit equipment, and testing lines to ensure proper signal transmission. When service disruptions occur, they diagnose problems by reading circuit diagrams and using specialized testing equipment, then splice damaged cables or replace malfunctioning components to restore connectivity.
