What They Do

Urban and regional planners shape the future of communities by designing how land and resources should be used to create functional, sustainable, and livable spaces. They spend their days reviewing development proposals, analyzing population data and environmental reports, and creating comprehensive plans that address housing needs, transportation systems, parks, and commercial zones. Much of their work involves collaboration—they meet with public officials, developers, community groups, and citizens to gather input and build consensus around planning decisions. Planners conduct field visits to examine sites firsthand, then return to their offices to draft zoning recommendations, create maps using specialized software, and prepare presentations for public hearings.
