What They Do

Database architects design and build the complex systems that store and organize massive amounts of information for businesses, hospitals, government agencies, and other large organizations. They spend their days planning database structures, creating detailed technical models, and ensuring that data flows efficiently between different systems. Much of their work involves analyzing an organization's information needs, then designing databases that can handle everything from customer records to financial transactions to inventory tracking. They write technical specifications, test database performance, and troubleshoot problems when systems slow down or fail. Database architects also establish security protocols to protect sensitive information and set standards that other IT professionals must follow when working with company data.
