What They Do

Materials scientists investigate the structure and properties of substances ranging from cutting-edge semiconductors to everyday plastics, seeking ways to improve existing materials or create entirely new ones. They spend much of their time in laboratories conducting experiments, using sophisticated instruments like electron microscopes and spectrometers to analyze how materials behave under different conditions. Their work might involve testing how a new polymer withstands extreme temperatures, developing stronger metal alloys for aerospace applications, or creating more efficient materials for solar panels and batteries.
