What They Do

Ship engineers keep vessels running smoothly by overseeing all mechanical and electrical systems aboard commercial ships, cargo vessels, or passenger ferries. They supervise engine room crews who operate and maintain the propulsion engines, boilers, generators, pumps, and various auxiliary systems that power everything from navigation equipment to refrigeration units. Throughout each voyage, they monitor gauges and computer systems to ensure engines run at optimal performance, make adjustments as needed, and coordinate repairs when equipment malfunctions. They also maintain detailed logs of fuel consumption, equipment performance, and maintenance activities to comply with maritime regulations.
