Purchasing Agents, Except Wholesale, Retail, and Farm Products

Purchase machinery, equipment, tools, parts, supplies, or services necessary for the operation of an establishment. Purchase raw or semifinished materials for manufacturing. May negotiate contracts.

What They Do

Purchasing agents handle the critical task of acquiring everything an organization needs to operate, from industrial machinery and computer systems to raw materials and office supplies. They spend their days researching potential suppliers, analyzing product specifications, negotiating contracts, and placing orders to ensure their company has the right materials at the right time and price. Much of their work involves comparing quotes from different vendors, evaluating product quality, and building relationships with suppliers to secure favorable terms. They monitor inventory levels, track shipments, and coordinate with various departments to understand upcoming needs. When problems arise—such as delayed deliveries or quality issues—they work quickly to find solutions and minimize disruptions to operations.
